World's airlines say they face $2.3bn loss this year as oil price stays high
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Record fuel costs are forecast to push the global airline industry back into loss in 2008 just a year after carriers returned collectively to a net profit for the first time since 2000. (article 6) Mr Bisignani said 24 airlines had gone bankrupt in the past six months and the sector faced $99bn of extra fuel costs in the year ahead. (article 6) The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents airlines, also said that if oil prices stayed at $135 a barrel, the losses could worsen to more than $6 billion. (article 5) More than 1,000 executives and officials from the global airline industry, gathered for the annual meeting of the International Air Transport Association, the sector's biggest get-together of the year, were in agreement that the outlook was bleak. (article 7) GENEVA The airline industry will lose $2.3 billion this year because of hikes in oil prices, the world airlines group said Monday, revising its earlier forecast of a collective industry profit. (article 4) Now the question for those and other U.S. airlines is how to get by and make money with oil prices near $130 a barrel. (article 9) Service levels at Heathrow Airport are "a national embarrassment", Giovanni Bisignani, head of International Air Transport Association (Iata) has said. (article 1)
