China Lists Dos and Don’ts for Olympics-Bound Foreigners
Summary from United States, from articles in English
BEIJING A Chinese mountaineering team took the Olympic flame to the top of the world Thursday, a spectacular feat dreamed up to underscore China's ambitions for the Beijing games. (article 6) The climbers could be heard struggling for breath in a live television broadcast as five torchbearers each shuffled a few feet before passing on the flame to the next person. (article 6) The final torchbearer, a Tibetan woman named Cering Wangmo, stood silently on the peak with her torch while other team members unfurled small Chinese and Olympic flags. (article 6) DHARMSALA, India The Dalai Lama's envoys and Chinese officials disagreed more than they agreed at weekend talks on how to move beyond the unrest in Tibet, one of the Tibetan spiritual leader's representatives said Thursday. (article 4) Both sides made "concrete proposals" that could be part of a future agenda for discussions on Tibet, said Lodi Gyari, a special envoy for the Dalai Lama. (article 4) Beijing has repeatedly accused the Dalai Lama and his supporters of fomenting recent anti-government protests in Tibet an allegation the spiritual leader denies. (article 4) Hu, speaking at a news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, demanded the Dalai Lama stop trying to divide China, incite violence and harm the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing. (article 3)
