G.M. Closing 4 Truck Plants in Shift Toward Cars
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
With no end in sight for elevated gas prices, G.M. announced drastic cuts in production of sport utility vehicles and pickups on Tuesday and stepped up plans for smaller cars and engines. (article 10) G.M.'s chairman and chief executive, Rick Wagoner, said G.M. will cease production at four North American assembly plants that make S.U.V.'s and pickups by 2010. (article 10) General Motors is closing four truck and SUV plants in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, affecting 10,000 workers, as surging fuel prices hasten a dramatic shift to smaller vehicles. (article 4) CEO Rick Wagoner said Tuesday before the automaker's annual meeting in Delaware the plants to be idled are in Oshawa, Ontario; Moraine, Ohio; Janesville, Wis.; and Toluca, Mexico. (article 4) Wagoner said the GM board has approved production of a new small Chevrolet car at a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, in mid-2010 and production of the Chevrolet Volt electric vehicle in Detroit. (article 4) As if emphasizing the end of an epoch in which American car companies drew profits from building bulk and passenger capacity into family vehicles, the company also said it may dump the Hummer brand perhaps the ultimate in auto excess. (article 7)
