Despite price increases, dining out is better than ever
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Two elements set the year apart: The large, flashy restaurants have given way to smaller, more personal places; and the restaurant boom has spread to Napa Valley and the Peninsula. (article 2) P There's a downside to the booming economy and the strong showing of restaurants in the past year: Prices are skyrocketing. (article 1) Of the 84 restaurants on this year's top 100 list that were on last year's, more than a quarter have raised their prices. (article 1) The biggest leaps occurred at Alain Rondelli, where main courses went from $16-$19 to $22-$27; Zuni Cafe, where the prices rose from $11-$18 to $17-$22; and the Fly Trap, from $9-$18 to $14-$23. (article 1) These are revisits of previously reviewed restaurants, usually a couple of years after the initial review or if there has been a chef change or significant revamp of menu or design. (article 6) NOTE: Michael Bauer's Top 100 Restaurants for 2003 will be published in the Sunday Magazine, April 13, 2003) The economy may be drab, but 2001 was a colorful year for restaurants. (article 4) Whittling the list down to 100 might sound easy, but with all the great food in the Bay Area, the challenge seemed monumental. (article 5)
