Texas gay couples heading to California for licensed marriages
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Five state lawmakers, backed by a conservative Christian policy group, sued Gov. David A. Paterson on Tuesday, seeking to block the governor's order directing state agencies to recognize same-sex marriages performed outside New York. (article 1) Defying governmental wrath, the mayor of a remote Greek island performed the country's first same-sex marriages on Tuesday, wedding two men and two women. (article 10) Setting the stage for a political showdown, the California secretary of state today said an initiative barring gay marriage had enough signatures to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot. (article 7) Many opponents of same-sex marriage saw the high court's ruling as a rejection of past ballot measures against the practice, most recently Proposition 22, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. (article 7) P (05-15) 12:38 PDT SAN FRANCISCO The California Supreme Court struck a historic but possibly short-lived blow for gay rights Thursday, overturning a state law that allowed only opposite-sex couples to marry. (article 5) In Rhode Island, for example, the state's top court ruled in December that gays married in Massachusetts can't get divorced here because lawmakers have never defined marriage as anything but a union between a man and woman. (article 11)
