McCain Letter to Obama Calls For 10 Joint Town Hall Meetings
Summary from United States, from articles in English
WASHINGTON - Barack Obama and John McCain have begun taking quiet but purposeful steps toward choosing their running mates, fresh signs that the Democratic nomination fight is over and the presidential race is rapidly moving toward the Obama-McCain general election matchup. (article 10) KENNER, LA. After months of ceding the spotlight to the battle between the Democratic Party candidates, Sen. John McCain declared a two-man race Tuesday night and wasted no time courting supporters of second-place finisher Hillary Rodham Clinton. (article 7) From CBS News' John Bentley: John McCain challenged Barack Obama to a series of 10 town hall meetings today between June 12th and the Democratic National Convention on August 25th. (article 2) The idea came from Barry Goldwater and John Kennedy, who had agreed to do a series of joint town hall meetings during the 1964 election, but ultimately didn't occur because of Kennedy's assassination. (article 2) NEW ORLEANS - Republican Senator John McCain wasted no time last night in launching his first general election broadside against Senator Barack Obama, casting the Democrat as an out-of-touch liberal who offers a false promise of change. (article 8) Campaign managers for the two sides later spoke by phone and agreed in spirit to participate in joint town hall appearances, McCain's campaign said. (article 3)
