Bailout pays airlines for years of bad management -
Summary from United States, from articles in English
The first thoughts of a grieving Congress were for airline solvency and symbolic defiance of the murderers, and the heck with cost. (article 4) U. S. airlines improved their on-time arrival record in April, with Seattle-based Alaska Airlines ranking among the top five of 19 carriers tracked by the U.S. Department of Transportation. (article 1) Alaska, which along with its sister carrier, Horizon, carries nearly half the passengers flying in and out of Seattle-Tacoma Airport, reported 81.6 percent of its flights arrived on schedule, compared to an average 77.7 for all the airlines surveyed. (article 1) American Airlines, which canceled more than 3,300 flights in April to inspect and repair wiring, had a 65.3 percent on-time rate, the lowest of the 19 carriers. (article 1) Now the question for those and other U.S. airlines is how to get by and make money with oil prices near $130 a barrel. (article 5) Consumers may benefit from more choices for the time being, but the airline industry's accelerating deterioration is no cause for celebration. (article 5) With other carriers announcing new fees or charges almost daily, Southwest Airlines Co. plans to launch an advertising campaign next week to denounce all the "nickel-and-diming" by its competitors. (article 7)
