NBA finals between Boston Celtics and Lakers could be one for ages
Summary from the United Kingdom, from articles in English
When Earvin "Magic" Johnson made his NBA Finals debut with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980, the games were televised on "tape delay" by the American networks, rather than shown live. (article 2) By the time Johnson and Larry Bird had finished restructuring the American sporting landscape and re-establishing their teams' decades-long rivalry, the sport would not be the same. (article 2) This season's NBA Finals, which open in Boston today with the first match in a best-of-seven series, are about more than business arithmetic. (article 2) BEGIN: Comment Teaser Module With Bill Russell, the most successful and arguably best ever basketball player, in their ranks, the Celtics won all six of the Finals meetings between the clubs as they dominated the 1960s. (article 2) The best-of-seven-games series will be the 11th time that the two teams have faced each other for the NBA crown. (article 1) Boston won eight of their record 16 titles against the Lakers, but LA won the last two of their encounters in the NBA showpiece, in 1985 and 1987. (article 1) Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was a key part of those title-winning teams and is still firing on all cylinders, winning his first NBA MVP trophy this season. (article 1)
