Online registration to be required for visa-free travel to U.S.
Summary from United States, from articles in English
WASHINGTON - The United States said yesterday that visitors from closely allied countries like Britain and Japan will soon have to register personal details online at least three days before arrival. (article 2) DHS will begin accepting applications via a secure Internet site on August 1, and will require visitors to use the Internet system beginning January 12, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said. (article 4) Citizens from VWP countries complete a written form providing basic biographical, travel and eligibility information while en route to the U.S. and submit the forms to border officials on arrival. (article 4) Under the new program, known as Electronic System for Travel Authorization, or ESTA, travelers will complete an electronic version of the form before traveling. (article 4) Chertoff on Tuesday said the relationships the U.S. has built with the Visa Waiver Program is leading to increased information sharing, making the U.S. more secure. (article 4) However, even people in the program will have to submit personal information for a background check before they can board a flight or ship headed for American soil. (article 1) Sources say the program is being implemented to comply with a new law, the Implementing Recommendations of the 9/11 Commission Act of 2007, which was passed by Congress last year. (article 1)
