IOC picks Chicago among four finalists for 2016 Summer Olympics
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
ATHENS A leading International Olympic Committee official heated up the war of words over the United States' portion of Olympic revenues Tuesday, and the escalation of rhetoric could burn Chicago's bid for the 2016 Summer Games. (article 1) IOC member Hein Verbruggen of the Netherlands called the U.S. Olympic Committee's share an " immoral amount of money compared to what other people get. (article 1) In Athens, where Chicago will likely be named one of the finalists today, the U.S. Olympic Committee was under fire Tuesday for what critics said was its refusal to renegotiate its "immoral" share of global Olympic revenues. (article 2) Qatar's Doha, which was rated by the IOC's working group as the third best overall bid, Azerbaijan's Baku and the Czech capital Prague fell at the first hurdle. (article 5) Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro are the cities shortlisted by the International Olympic Committee to host the 2016 Olympic Games. (article 8) " All the bids were of a very high standard Rogge said later in a separate IOC statement. (article 6) The IOC's Executive Board will pick an unspecified number of cities for the shortlist, before candidates submit detailed files and allow IOC evaluators to inspect their bids ahead of the decision in October 2009.
