Classic film prints lost in Universal Studios fire
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
After the massive fire at Universal Studios Hollywood, Los Angeles County officials are studying whether building codes for movie sets, sound stages and production facilities should be strengthened. (article 8) Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky called for county fire officials to examine whether highly combustible sets should be covered by the same building and fire regulations that apply to office and industrial buildings. (article 8) In addition to the ruined "King Kong" attraction and the burned New York street scapes, the Universal Studios Hollywood fire has claimed another casualty: perhaps hundreds of classic 35-millimeter film prints, the studio said Tuesday. (article 9) The damage has not yet been tallied but will likely exceed the estimated $25 million caused by a fire in 1990 that also destroyed the streetscape and caused minor water damage to the King Kong attraction. (article 10) (Andrew Gombert/Associated Press) The massive fire that swept through a back lot of Universal Studios on the weekend was an accident sparked by workers on a film set, fire officials said Monday afternoon. (article 4) Staffers opened the gates to the Universal City, Calif., movie studio and theme park Monday for a host of tourists, some of whom greeted remaining firefighters on the scene with a round of applause. (article 7)
