Lawyer Weiss gets 30 months for kickback scheme
Summary from United States, from articles in English
U.S. District Judge John F. Walter also ordered Weiss to pay $9.7 million in forfeitures and $250,000 in fines. (article 2) Monday's sentencing of plaintiffs' attorney Mel Weiss to two-and-a-half years in prison for paying secret kickbacks to some of his investor clients marks the end of an era for US class action lawsuits. (article 3) At its peak, Mr Weiss's former firm Milberg Weiss served as lead attorneys in more than 50 per cent of US class action securities cases and won billions of dollars in settlements for disgruntled investors. (article 3) The Federal Communications Commission has approved an Everett radio station's application to build new broadcast towers that will boost its signal from 5,000 watts to 34,000 during the day and 50,000 at night. (article 4) KRKO-AM 1380's reach is limited largely to Snohomish County, said Andy Skotdal, president and general manager of the family-owned station. (article 4) Mr Weiss who pleaded guilty to a federal racketeering conspiracy charge in April, was also ordered by a federal judge to forfeit $9.75m in gains and pay $250,000 in fines. (article 1) The prison sentence was at the high end of the 18 to 33 months range in the plea agreement reached by US prosecutors and Mr Weiss's lawyers. (article 1)
