Bo Diddley, giant figure in rock, dies at 79 (Entertainment, 8 articles)
|
P Bo Diddley, a rhythm-and-blues pioneer who was one of the major architects of rock n roll, died Monday from heart failure at his home in Archer, Fla., where he had lived for the past 20 years. Everybody who followed - from Buddy Holly to the Rolling Stones, from the Grateful Dead to the Clash - knew his music, covered his songs and incorporated his trademark beat into their own records. One cannot think of Bo Diddley without hearing his calling card: That primal, propulsive " Bo Diddley beat one of the most easily identifiable and oft-imitated rhythms in rock-and-roll history. Yet, among students of the music many of whom became superstars themselves Diddley's place in the pantheon was never in doubt. Fictional rock DJ Dr. Johnny Fever, on acclaimed 80s sitcom "WKRP in Cincinnati once asked," Who will teach the children about Bo Diddley?. Diddley's signature was the syncopated rhythm with Afro-Cuban roots and its own American history as the "hambone" and "shave-and-a-haircut/two bits" beats. Even though Mr. Diddley enjoyed only a handful of hits during a 40-year recording career, his impact on the evolution of rock music was vast.

In addition to the ruined "King Kong" attraction and the burned New York street scapes, the Universal Studios Hollywood fire has claimed another casualty: perhaps hundreds of classic 35-millimeter film prints, the studio said Tuesday.

Mel Ferrer, actor and ex-husband of Audrey Hepburn (Entertainment, 4 articles)
|
Mel Ferrer was best known internationally as a gangling, gauntly handsome, if somewhat inexpressive leading man of Hollywood films, and for his marriage in the 1960s to Audrey Hepburn. He had a multi-faceted career which took in writing, publishing, radio, and the Broadway stage, and he produced and directed films as well as acting in them. His fortunes took a severe dip in the 1960s and 1970s when he was reduced to appearing in cheaply made Italian horror films, but he enjoyed a modest late success on American television, notably in the soap opera, Falcon Crest.

" I just saw a trailer for a movie called Made of Honor which stars Patrick Dempsey as a single man who's platonically close with a girlfriend, played by Michelle Monaghan. As soon as she announces her engagement to another man, he realizes he's in love with her. " Why do we keep seeing these types of movies in which we know the plot so well, the two good looking people who are destined to come together, even though they are attached to the wrong suitors?
