Kylie Minogue's breast cancer leads to screening spike in young women: study (Science/Technology, 12 articles)
Of more than 1,000 advanced-stage cancer patients who were studied, those who had at least one parent or sibling with colon cancer were 28 percent less likely to die or have the cancer return after treatment, researchers found. Combining a mammogram with an ultrasound exam is more effective than mammography alone at detecting breast cancer in women at high risk for the disease, according to a study published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association. CHICAGO - Colon cancer patients with a family history of the disease may live longer once treated than those without the family link, researchers said yesterday. Major strides made against cancer could be undone by the last five years of flat federal funding for cancer research, leading scientists say. The situation has led to a curtailment of research into breast cancer, melanoma, sarcoma and pediatric cancers, according to Davidson The cancer incidence in boys was 174 cases per million, compared with 157 cases per million in girls. The Austrian researchers also found that women who took Zometa (zoledronic acid) had a 30 percent lower risk of the cancer spreading to the bone, with other benefits as well.

Mars lander prepares to dig for signs of habitability - (Science/Technology, 6 articles)
The US space agency's new robotic craft on Mars has been commanded to carry out a second practice dig before beginning its real work. When the arm collected and released its first scoopful of soil on Sunday, some of the sample stuck to the scoop. Ground controllers were waiting to know how Phoenix fared last night, when an orbiting Mars probe passes over the landing site and relays the data to Earth.

ABC News: Phew! Space Station's Only Toilet Fixed (Science/Technology, 6 articles)
So when astronauts living aboard the International Space Station called for a plumber, no one balked at the call-out fee of $450 million ($230 million). Space shuttle Discovery's main mission is to install the Kibo lab module on the International Space Station - but what's really captivated the world's attention is a more fundamental issue. Less than a week before Discovery lifted off from Cape Canaveral Saturday evening, the Russian-built zero-gravity toilet aboard the space station broke down.

The Decline and Fall of the Animal Kingdom (Science/Technology, 4 articles)
Some of the greatest moments in the history of biology slip from the world's memory, their anniversaries hardly noticed among the wars, bankruptcies and celebrity detoxifications. Before this month passes, let us stop to remember one of those great moments that came 30 years ago, in November 1977: the death knell of the animal kingdom. The animal kingdom's decline came in the form of a three-page paper that appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
