Chicago Stays in Running After Early Vote to Decide Host of 2016 Olympics

Chicago joined three cities Wednesday in moving a step closer to becoming the host of the 2016 Olympics, setting up a final, fierce race to see which one will hold those Summer Games. (article 1) Local Olympic hopefuls graduated to the next round Wednesday as Chicago was named one of four finalist cities eligible to host the 2016 games. (article 2) The sometimes blunt grading said Chicago's construction costs "appear low" and characterized as "optimistic" the Chicago 2016 committee's projected operating revenues that are being counted on to cover expenses. (article 2) While praising Chicago's hotel accommodations, security and environmental efforts, the International Olympic Committee also questioned the Chicago bid's guarantees and wondered about the state of public transportation. (article 2) ATHENS (Reuters) - Seven cities bidding for the 2016 Olympics will hear on Wednesday whether they have made an International Olympic Committee shortlist, allowing them to enter a final round of bidding ahead of next year's decision. (article 3) The IOC's Executive Board will pick an unspecified number of cities for the shortlist, before candidates submit detailed files and allow IOC evaluators to inspect their bids ahead of the decision in October 2009. (article 3)
