China's bereaved families adopt earthquake orphans
Summary from United States, from articles in English
DUJIANGYAN, China - Authorities cordoned off some schools that collapsed in last month's mighty earthquake, keeping out grieving parents and reporters Wednesday in a sign that Beijing was growing more nervous over accusations of shoddy construction. (article 3) Parents whose children were crushed in their classrooms during the May 12 quake vowed to keep pushing the government for compensation, as well as for an explanation of why so many schools fell when other buildings remained standing. (article 3) The students' deaths have become a political challenge for the government, which is trying to provide for the 5 million people left homeless amid growing accusations of corruption in school construction. (article 3) Most of the dozens of schools that collapsed in the quake, killing an estimated 9,000 children, were built more than a decade ago, with multiple layers of government and private companies involved in their construction. (article 5) DUJIANGYAN, China - Police officers here on Tuesday surrounded more than 100 parents protesting shoddy school construction and mourning the deaths of thousands of children during the recent earthquake. (article 4) The attempt to snuff out the protest was the strongest sign so far of the government's growing impatience with public airing of grievances over unsafe school construction. (article 4)
