Wal-Mart whittles merchandise to boost sales
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Despite falling consumer confidence and gas prices that teetered around $4 a gallon, retailers said Thursday that same-store sales for May were stronger than expected, touching off a stock market rally that lifted the main indexes nearly 2 percent. (article 8) ROGERS, Ark. - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is using lessons from its U.S. operations such as multiple store formats and environmental sustainability to help grow its international business, whose sales increased almost 18 percent to $90.6 billion last year. (article 3) Same-store sales, or sales at stores opened at least a year, in Wal-Mart Brazil's division were up 9.2 percent in its fiscal first quarter. (article 3) On Thursday, the day before its annual shareholders' meeting, Wal-Mart reported a 3.9 percent increase in same-store sales in May, much better than the 1.6 percent gain that analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected. (article 2) NEW YORK Consumers stepped up their shopping in May after tax rebate checks hit mailboxes, giving many of the nation's retailers stronger than expected sales for the month. (article 6) NEW YORK - Tax rebate checks gave consumers a little extra money in their pockets during May, but most were still spending conservatively, buying necessities such as food and gas and shying away from splurging on clothing or furniture.
