By choosing to have brain surgery at Duke University, Senator Edward M. Kennedy appears to have opted for an aggressive attack on his malignant tumor, by a hand-picked surgeon at a treatment center whose motto is " There is Hope. (article 3) Kennedy's tumor was located in a region of the brain involved with language and movement, and surgery is typically not recommended if the risk of harm to such sensitive areas is too great. (article 2) Successful resection, or surgical removal, of a brain tumor before radiation or chemotherapy can significantly improve a patient's outlook, said Dr. Eric T. Wong (article 2) The couple asked " a ton of questions listened to the doctors lay out the various courses of treatment, and then left the room, said a source familiar with the meeting.
