Looking back: Larry Bird and team Magic and team Isiah and team Michael Jordan and Team Akeem and team Tim team Now, KoBe team vs. KG team 48. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was a key part of those title-winning teams and is still firing on all cylinders, winning his first NBA MVP trophy this season. "First Time Since 69" was in advance of the 1987 hope that the Celtics could win back-to-back titles for the first time since, well, 69.

  • Red Wings beat Penguins to close in on Stanley Cup (Sports, 25 articles)
In 2003 Giguere played in a triple-overtime and a single-overtime game against Detroit, a five-overtime game and a single-overtime game against Dallas, a double-overtime game at Minnesota and two single-overtime games against New Jersey. Despite Wednesday's 3-2 home loss - the capper on a hard-fought six-game defeat to the Detroit Red Wings - the Eastern Conference champions made a great leap forward in 2007-08, becoming the NHL's unofficial Up-And-Coming Young Team to Watch. Using a little Motown magic on the road, the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in 11 seasons Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of the finals.
Big Brown: Not a gods-on favorite :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Horse racing (Sports, 20 articles)
Dutrow, who cut his teeth at Pimlico helping his dad train horses, knows that neither the inside post nor the outside post is kind to horses. As the next two weeks play out leading up to the 133rd Preakness, the conversation will be less about Big Brown's competition he has nearly none but rather of horse racing safety. At the Belmont Stakes draw Wednesday, he said he would be talking a lot if his mount, Big Brown, wins Saturday's 1 1/2 -mile race.

  • Still a Raider, running back Jordan set for minicamp (Sports, 8 articles)
P (06-03) 20:38 PDT The Raiders locked LaMont Jordan out of practice Tuesday, and it shouldn't be long before he's shown the door. Jordan reported for mandatory minicamp, only to be told he could not join the team on the field, coach Lane Kiffin said after the first of two practices Tuesday. Quarterback JaMarcus Russell looks much more comfortable after starting only one game as a rookie and first-round pick Darren McFadden could provide a game-breaking element that has been missing on offense in recent years.
White Sox hold on for victory :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: White Sox (Sports, 5 articles)
CLEVELAND - Carlos Quentin drove in three runs, including a go-ahead, two-run double in a three-run seventh inning that led the White Sox over the Cleveland Indians 6-5 today. Gallagher just getting comfortable :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Cubs (Sports, 9 articles)
Are the Cubs a good October team? " You 're just always trying to manage the 25- and 40-man roster all year Cubs GM Jim Hendry said Thursday, taking a break between the first and second rounds of the baseball draft. LOS ANGELES A few days ago, a national writer asked Cubs manager Lou Piniella to cite the biggest difference in the Cubs' best-in-baseball success. Is this the year that Chicago Cubs fans can again hope for the improbable? With the Cubs sitting atop the NL Central Division with the best record in baseball so far this season, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti says yes.

  • Best of Ozzie's bleep :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: White Sox (Sports, 8 articles)
Ozzie Guillen may have patched things up with general manager Ken Williams after his latest outburst, but now hitting coach Greg Walker is apparently unhappy with the loquacious White Sox manager's most recent tirade. While his self-imposed silent treatment on that point remained intact Tuesday, that doesn't mean there weren't further questions about his future, especially after manager Ozzie Guillen brought it up in his tirade Sunday. The Sox matched their season high with four home runs in a 9-5 victory Tuesday at U.S. Cellular Field, and it didn't matter that the outburst came at the expense of the struggling Kansas City Royals.
Tiger Woods takes early U.S. Open peek at Torrey Pines (Sports, 6 articles)
Tiger Woods played his first round of golf Wednesday since knee surgery two days after the Masters, getting a thumbs-up from his swing coach after 17-plus holes at Torrey Pines riding in a cart. The San Diego Union-Tribune, which first reported on its Web site that Woods had played, said the round lasted 3 hours, 15 minutes amid tight security. Woods had said Monday in a conference call for the PGA Championship that while he had been able to practice, he had not played a full round of golf since the Masters.

Rock-Solid Sorenstam Leads by 3 (Sports, 5 articles)
Hitting fairways and greens consistently and scrambling when necessary with radar-like wedge play, Sorenstam stretched her bogey-free string to 53 holes before hooking a drive into the water on No. 18. Her string of four bogeys in five holes ended just before Sorenstam made back-to-back long putts, both for birdie, to open an eight-shot lead over the woman who has taken her place at the top of the sport. Ochoa started well, holing a long birdie putt on the first hole, and was 2 under through seven holes, but 5 over after that, finishing with a 74 to drop into a tie for 10th.

Orioles' Loewen to return as reliever (Sports, 4 articles)
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - The matchup didn't seem to favor the Orioles on paper or in the batter's box. Orioles manager Dave Trembley summoned left-hander Jamie Walker from the bullpen in the sixth inning yesterday with two runners on base, two outs, the score tied and Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena due up. The move wasn't automatic, as Pena had hit game-tying home runs off Walker on two consecutive nights last month at Tropicana Field.

The Florida Marlins selected Riverside Patriot High catcher Kyle Skipworth sixth overall, the second consecutive year the franchise chose a high school power hitter from the Southland with their first pick. Ivanovic beats Jankovic; faces Safina in French Open final (Sports, 6 articles)
PARIS Such an uncommon volatility rattles the top of women's tennis approaching the French Open final on Saturday that it wouldn't be surprising to learn the No. 1 spot had been closed temporarily for renovations and the top-ranked player would occupy No. 2. Jelena Jankovic might have become No. 1 by winning her semifinal, and almost did but didn't, and might have a hangover. FRENCH OPEN PARIS If official statistics were tallied for fist pumps and self-exhortations during Grand Slam matches, Ana Ivanovic might well have established a record while winning her French Open semifinal.
Pietersen century rescues England (Sports, 5 articles)
Portraying himself as the man for the tough occasion, Kevin Pietersen sounded more like Clint Eastwood riding into a lawless town than a batsman walking to the wicket as he reflected on the slowest of his 12 Test hundreds. He placed his innings in the context of his recent century in Napier, where England slipped to 36 for four before winning the decisive third Test, and his career-defining 158 in the 2005 Ashes at the Brit Oval. This time England teetered on 86 for five after another first-innings collapse that incorporated the loss of three wickets in successive overs after lunch.

The Europeans have other things on their mind in June, namely Euro 2008, the quadrennial soccer championship that leaves most of that continent and much of the globe transfixed. A three-week extravaganza which organizers hope will draw a global TV audience in excess of eight billion viewers gets underway with a relatively low-key game in Basel (noon EDT). The Swiss, along with co-hosts Austria, are expected to be among the eight casualties of the group stage while World Cup winners Italy, beaten finalists France, Germany, Spain and Portugal should all reach the quarter-finals.
