(article 9) Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a Parliamentary chamber packed with legislators and aboriginal representatives that there could be no excuses for what happened at the church-run schools, which mainly operated from the 1870s to the 1970s. (article 6) OTTAWA - For eight years, Thomas Louttit was forced to attend a residential school whose mission was to "Christianize and civilize" Canada's native people. (article 7) Most schools were operated as "joint ventures" with Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian or United churches. (article 8)
