Kobe Bryant leads Lakers to 87-81 win over Celtics in Game 3 (Sports, 31 articles)
|
Boston's Big Three shot awfully as did most of the Celtics, but the NBA s top-seeded team stayed competitive for much of the game thanks to a stark disparity in free throws. The Lakers led by 11 points early but saw the Celtics come back to take the lead midway through the third quarter, at which point Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom had combined to score no field goals. League MVP Kobe Bryant scored 36 points, had seven rebounds and played superb defense on the Celtics' Paul Pierce to help the Lakers avoid opening the series in an 0-3 hole. The Celtics went into last night's game at the Staples Center needing two wins in three games to close the deal on Banner No. 17 in Los Angeles. Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant led the way with 36 points as they beat the Boston Celtics 87-81 to win game three of the NBA finals. The team that was favored to win the NBA Finals suddenly needs to win four of its next five games to make an implausible season stay that way. Little-used reserve Leon Powe came off the bench to have the game of his career with 21 points in just 15 minutes for the Celtics.

With Big Brown trying to become the first Triple Crown champion in 30 years after dominant wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, Desormeaux eased up the unbeaten colt with a quarter-mile remaining in the Belmont on Saturday. Mickey and Karen Taylor were nervous Saturday morning after hearing Casino Drive was scratched from the Belmont Stakes because of a bruised left-hind hoof. The owners of the late Seattle Slew deemed Casino Drive - one of Seattle Slew's many great-grandsons - the most likely to derail Big Brown's bid for the first Triple Crown since Affirmed accomplished the feat in 1978.

The image lingers, hanging longer than any pitch the Angels' John Lackey tossed in a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Matthews, who collected a season-high four hits Monday night and is riding a seven-game hitting streak in which he has raised his average from.215 to.249, was examined by team physician Craig Milhouse.

Updegrove, who guided county rival C. Milton Wright to four state championships in the early 1980s, led the Cougars to a third straight winning season since returning to coaching in 2006. One thing that has stood out for the veteran coach since his return has been the improvement of pitching with nearly every team. Updegrove has compiled a record of 39-23 record in his three seasons at Fallston, and with a solid group returning next year, the winning ways should continue.

Bears release troubled Cedric Benson (Sports, 4 articles)

He hasn't officially been named the starter yet, but in the first day of the post-Cedric Benson era, Matt Forte was running with the Bears' first team during organized team activities at Halas Hall. The future is here, and if the initial reaction from those representing free-agent running backs is a good gauge, the Bears are comfortable where they are. Adrian Peterson always has been lauded as a dependable backup, and bringing in someone from the discard pile would serve only to muddy the situation with Garrett Wolfe.

Firing of coach Jeff Pentland should be the first of many moves for Mariners (Sports, 5 articles)

TORONTO - Onetime Mariners reject Brad Wilkerson going deep in the fifth inning was the first sign things would turn out badly for Seattle. The next indicator came a half-inning later when Jose Lopez went down swinging with the tying run at third and only one out. Lopez whiffs in key situations about as often as Wilkerson hits the ball beyond an outfielder's reach, so the two unlikely events coming together created the perfect storm to rain on the Mariners' parade.
