NASA's gamma-ray telescope lifts off
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
NASA's newest gamma-ray observatory soared on Wednesday into orbit, where it will search for the most energetic events the universe has to offer. (article 5) The Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) tore through the cloudy skies of Florida atop a Delta II Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral. (article 5) Deputy project scientist Julie McEnery, also of Goddard, watched from a beach and listened to launch commentary on a hand-held radio. (article 5) Since co-founding The Runaways at age 15 to loving rock n roll and not giving a damn about her "Bad Reputation" with her next band the Blackhearts, Joan Jett has scratched her name into the annals of rock history. (article 6) A Nasa space telescope has launched successfully on a mission to explore the Universe with "gamma-ray glasses". (article 3) The Glast mission will shed light on some of the most violent events in the Universe, that release massive amounts of energy in the form of gamma-rays. (article 3) It will scan the sky for massive cosmic explosions, giant black holes that hurl matter across space, and dense neutron stars with powerful magnetic fields. (article 3) Gamma rays are the highest-energy form of light, and the gamma-ray sky is very different from that perceived by the naked eye, the agency said. (article 2)
