Obama opens door to religious leaders :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Barack Obama
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Tuesday Obama met with "prominent evangelicals and other faith leaders" in a closed door meeting in Chicago, according to a statement released by the campaign. (article 4) Bishop T.D. Jakes, a prominent black clergyman who heads a Dallas megachurch, said Obama took questions, listened to participants and discussed his " personal journey of faith. (article 2) The discussion "went absolutely everywhere Jakes told The Associated Press, and" just about every Christian stripe was represented in that room. (article 2) Jakes, who does not endorse candidates and said he also hopes to meet with Republican presidential candidate John McCain, said some participants clearly have political differences with Obama. (article 2) Jakes said the meeting, at a law firm's offices, seemed designed to prompt a wide discussion rather than to result in commitments from either Obama or those attending. (article 2) WASHINGTON Presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama huddled privately Tuesday with a group of influential Christians in downtown Chicago not all supporters to help shape conversations Obama wants to have with voters as he heads toward the general election. (article 3) The meeting, which the campaign says has been planned for weeks now, includes Bishop Phillip Cousin, Rev. Stephen Thurston, and Dr. T Dewitt Smith. (article 1)
