Source of tainted tomatoes in salmonella outbreak still unknown
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Federal officials said Thursday that they might never learn which farms produced tainted tomatoes that have now sickened 228 people in 23 states with a rare form of salmonella. (article 1) Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, tomatoes sold with the vine still attached and homegrown tomatoes are likely not the source of the outbreak, federal officials said. (article 8) WASHINGTON - The toll from salmonella-tainted tomatoes jumped to 228 illnesses Thursday as the government learned of five dozen previously unknown cases and said it is possible the food poisoning contributed to a cancer patient's death. (article 3) " I have had phone calls from producers saying their tomatoes are being blocked, not all varieties but some varieties Alberto Cardenas said, stressing that U.S. officials had found no evidence so far that Mexican tomatoes were unsafe to eat. (article 14) Experts say supermarkets and fast food chains that threw out tomatoes suspected in a salmonella outbreak were acting aggressively to protect their customers' health and avoid a consumer backlash. (article 4) CHICAGO (AP) - McDonald's, Wal-Mart and other chains have halted sales of some raw tomatoes as federal health officials work to trace the source of a multistate outbreak of salmonella food poisoning. (article 6)
