Pierce helps Celtics rally, take lead over Lakers with Game 4 victory (Sports, 24 articles)
The Lakers lost a 24-point lead in historic fashion, a stagger turning into a numbing collapse against the Boston Celtics, who took Game 4 of the NBA Finals, 97-91, Thursday at Staples Center. Kobe Bryant led the way with 36 points as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics 87-81 to win game three of the NBA finals. The Lakers went into the game knowing defeat would almost certainly end their hopes of a 15th NBA title, with no team ever having come back from a 3-0 deficit in the play-offs. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Kevin Garnett needs to emerge from his scoring slump in the NBA finals if the Boston Celtics are going to win their record 17th title, Coach Doc Rivers said Wednesday. Lakers coach Phil Jackson called the loss a "down game" for the Celtics but said the Eastern Conference champions were primed for a comeback in Thursday's Game Four. Boston rallied from a 24-point deficit and beat the Los Angeles Lakers 97-91 on Thursday night to take a commanding 3-1 lead in this history-rich series and move within one victory of a 17th championship that seemed impossible a year ago.

Luiz Felipe Scolari has CV to match Chelsea players' ambitions (Sports, 12 articles)
The Brazilian, who will take over as manager at Stamford Bridge next month, will be given an unlimited transfer budget by Roman Abramovich, the club's owner, and has proposed signing Kaka and Deco. Unlike Avram Grant, who took more than six months to earn the grudging respect of his players, Scolari will have their immediate backing, possessing the credentials and charisma to leave even established internationals quaking in their boots. The Portugal coach, who will take over as Chelsea manager next month, has a reputation as a stern disciplinarian, which should not come as much of a surprise because his own philandering days were short and sweet.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - As the Giants took the field for the first time in the post- Michael Strahan era, it was the absence of two other stars that threatened the team's harmony and quickly dimmed its championship glow. Tight end Jeremy Shockey, who missed the Super Bowl run with a broken leg and asked for a trade this off-season, came to the minicamp but stayed indoors while other injured players watched workouts from the practice field sideline. Burress reported to the Giants' mandatory minicamp Wednesday but refused to work out because he wasn't happy with the way contract negotiations are progressing between the team and agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Modell stands first in league for heart, generosity, spirit - (Sports, 4 articles)
Maybe this year the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee will invoke a statute of limitation on the Ravens' move from Cleveland to Baltimore after the 1995 season and vote former majority owner Art Modell in as a member. This should have been done a few years ago, but apparently there are still hard feelings from several voters on the panel. He helped negotiate with ABC the first Monday night football contract, and put together the first TV network deals that eventually transformed the NFL into the top sports league in the world today

Beenhakker, who has coached Ajax and Real Madrid, also claimed the draw hurt more than the defeat by Germany in their Group B opener.
Red Wings Give Coach Babcock Three-Year Extension (Sports, 4 articles)
Pictures of Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay and all the Red Wings greats of the past adorn the walls along with a row of Stanley Cups depicting the franchise's 10 championship seasons. Lidstrom will one day join that elite group, but for now he is a proud member of a gang of five that own three Stanley Cup rings with the Red Wings and are one win away from another. Back in Detroit after a stirring 2-1 victory in Pittsburgh on Saturday night, the Red Wings gathered for what well could be their last off day before a championship parade.

Wagner blows 3rd straight save as D'backs top Mets (Sports, 10 articles)
The Mets recent losses have come in a sickening loop, one in which the outcome is sensed before the rest of the grisly plot unfolds. Alou returned from the disabled list last night but left after six innings when Willie Randolph said his previously-injured calf "got a little stiff" during the game's 61-minute rain delay. After Wagner flushed Mike Pelfrey's gem, Beltran smacked a two-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning to give the Mets a 5-3 victory over the Diamondbacks, snapping a five-game skid.

Liu, who set his record in 2006 and has become highly visible in China as a star athlete and corporate pitchman, did not participate in Thursday's race.
