Woods Forces a Playoff With a Dramatic Birdie on 18 (Sports, 41 articles)
One shot behind after a collapse no one saw coming, Woods birdied the 18th hole to force sudden death at Torrey Pines against a journeyman with a creaky back who simply wouldn't go away. Woods, who led by one shot overnight, continued to struggle with a painful left knee but drained a 12-footer on the 72nd hole to keep his hopes alive. SAN DIEGO - Rocco Mediate had hoped to play in the final pairing with Tiger Woods on Sunday, saying all he wanted was a chance to compete against the world's best player. Woods slithered a 12-foot birdie putt into the right side of the cup at No. 18 to pull even with Mediate on Sunday's 72nd hole and force one extra day of adrenaline at Torrey Pines. At times wincing as pain shot through his surgically repaired left knee, at times smiling in disbelief as another of his shots disappeared in the hole, Woods played himself into position to win his 14th major championship. With unbearable pain and three unforgettable shots, Woods turned in one of his most memorable performances in a major Saturday by holing two long eagle putts, chipping in for birdie and somehow taking a one-shot lead over Lee Westwood.

  • Los Angeles Lakers still alive, beat Boston Celtics 103-98 in Game 5 (Sports, 23 articles)
The Lakers had just seen a 14-point fourth-quarter lead shrink to just two points in the final minute, when Bryant reached behind Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce, forcing Pierce to lose the ball to Lamar Odom. Los Angeles Lakers kept their title hopes alive with a 103-98 home victory over Boston Celtics in the fourth game of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Kobe Bryant scored five points in the final four minutes to hold off a Celtics fightback and send the series back to Boston for game six on Tuesday.
Other stories about Bryant, Lakers and Celtics:

  • Phelps, other swimmers find new suit up to speed - (Sports, 12 articles)
INDIANAPOLIS - The third day of the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships was marked by a pair of exciting rivalry races one marred by a bad start, and the other capped by an exciting finish. Just a half-hour after his third-place finish in the 400-meter freestyle yesterday, Michael Phelps took to the starting blocks for the 100-meter butterfly and another showdown with world record holder Ian Crocker. Phelps had previously coasted to victory in the 200-meter freestyle, casually setting a U.S. Open record with his time of 1 minute, 44.98 seconds.

Junior's fuel strategy ends 76-race winless streak (Sports, 7 articles)
He won for second time in the last three Sprint Cup Series points races Sunday at Pocono Raceway, and counting his win in the All-Star race, Kahne has been to Victory Lane three times in the past four events. Kahne snapped a 52-race winless streak two weeks ago in the Coca-Cola 600, which came eight days after he scored a $1 million payday by winning the All-Star race. Still riding that momentum, Kahne hopes to parlay his front row starting spot into his second points win of the season.
Mets Leave Randolph to Wonder About His Future (Sports, 8 articles)
A few minutes later, Howard Johnson, the hitting coach, ducked out a side door to work with players in the batting cage. No one vanished in transit Sunday night during their fourth flight out west in seven weeks or was prohibited from boarding the team bus. Nothing, then, has changed since Sunday, when General Manager Omar Minaya - the only notable person not here, actually - refused to guarantee that the coaching staff would be intact for Monday's game.

Final Hall of Fame Game canceled by thunderstorms (Sports, 7 articles)
He stayed late into the night, game after game, signing every baseball, every autograph book, every scorecard that was proffered in just about every American League city. The Major League Baseball Players Association had encouraged players to be more engaging with the fans after the lengthy work stoppage, but nobody told Ripken to take the concept to a whole new level. Sometime in the early afternoon on Tuesday, Cal Ripken will pick up the phone in Baltimore and Tony Gwynn will pick up the phone in San Diego, and it won't be to make a bet on the AFC championship game.
Klasnic scores for Croatia to beat Poland and advance to quarter-finals (Sports, 5 articles)
Germany finished Group B as the runner-up to Croatia and will face the 2004 runner-up Portugal in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Having been angered by several decisions against his team, including a yellow card to striker Erwin Hoffer for a late but minor challenge on Ballack, Austria's Josef Hickersberger was ejected in the 41st minute. KLAGENFURT, Austria - Ivan Klasnic scored Monday to give Croatia a 1-0 win against Poland in a European Championship match stripped of significance by Germany's defeat of Austria in the other Group B match.

Wang Out Two Months, but Yankees Say They Won’t Rush Into a Trade (Sports, 5 articles)
NEW YORK- Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang is expected to be sidelined until at least September after injuring his foot running the bases, prompting club co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner to chastise the National League for playing without a designated hitter. An examination in New York on Monday showed Wang partially tore a tendon and sprained his right foot Sunday during the Yankees' 13-0 interleague win at Houston. He will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for a minimum of six weeks, the latest blow to the team's banged-up pitching staff.
Sox lose Konerko, five of last six :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: White Sox (Sports, 4 articles)
When White Sox backup catcher Chris Widger cracked one of his bats during a game in the 2006 season, Jackie Lagoni didn't realize it would someday be hers. The die-hard Sox fan, who lives on the North Side, bought the bat for just $25 during a "garage sale" at U.S. Cellular Field Saturday. The greater concern for White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen after losing to the Colorado Rockies 5-3 on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field was the immediate future of Paul Konerko.

Nadal determined see Federer at Wimbledon (Sports, 8 articles)
Saturday in London, two days before Wimbledon begins, the world's three top men's players are all but certain to be voted on to the player council of the Association of Tennis Professionals. Why? Because Nadal so thoroughly, so untheatrically, outplayed Federer in every possible facet Sunday, beating him 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 to win a fourth consecutive title at Roland Garros. Turns out Nadal was only moments away from winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 against Nicolas Almagro, the most lopsided men's quarterfinal at Roland Garros in the 40-year history of the Open era.
