Brown Says Europe Will Tighten Iran Sanctions
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
A Democratic senator unveiled a new Iran sanctions bill today that would tighten the current trade ban with that country, expand financial sanctions and close loopholes that have allowed some U.S. firms to create subsidiaries to invest in Iran. (article 9) Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, said his bill would incorporate elements of an earlier Iran sanctions bill, but would take " a much stronger stance on Iran sanctions. (article 9) " Slowing the flow of funds and nuclear assistance to Iran's current regime is in the interest of the American people Baucus said. (article 9) President Bush hit pay dirt yesterday in what has been widely billed as his farewell tour of Europe with pledges for new financial sanctions against Iran and a commitment for a net increase of 230 British troops in Afghanistan. (article 7) The proposal was designed to halt the Islamic Republic's uranium enrichment program, which Iranians say is a civilian energy program but some Western leaders believe could help Iran build a nuclear bomb. (article 7) With Bush at his side, Brown announced a tough new round of sanctions on Iran and said there will be more to come if the Iranian government continues to defy international demands to curb its nuclear program. (article 4)
