Sense of Calm as Gay Couples Wed in California

In 2004, Massachusetts became the first state to allow same-sex marriage, based on a ruling of its highest court interpreting the state's Constitution. (article 4) LOS ANGELES - Serenaded by a gay men's chorus, showered with rose petals and toasted with champagne, hundreds of tearful same-sex couples got married across the state Tuesday in what some are calling California's new Summer of Love. (article 3) Many more are expected to follow in the footsteps of one of California's most iconic same-sex couples and apply for marriage licenses and exchange vows today the first day gay and lesbian marriages will be legal throughout the state. (article 8) The results mark the first time in over three decades of polling by the Field Poll that more California voters have approved of extending marriage to gay couples than have disapproved, said Field Poll director Mark DiCamillo. (article 7) The weddings began in a handful of locations around the state at exactly 5:01 p.m., the earliest time allowed by last month's decision by the California Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage.
