Woods outlasts Mediate for third Open, 14th major (Sports, 29 articles)
One shot behind after a collapse no one saw coming, Woods birdied the 18th hole to force sudden death at Torrey Pines against a journeyman with a creaky back who simply wouldn't go away. That one extra hole was enough to doom Mediate, trying to become the oldest U.S. Open champion at 45 years, 6 months. After holding off a late fightback by Mediate to clinch the title at the 91st hole on a sun-kissed day at Torrey Pines, Woods said he would take a break to rest his painful left knee.

Mets fire manager Willie Randolph, Manuel promoted (Sports, 22 articles)
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Willie Randolph, fired as manager of the Mets in the early hours of the morning Tuesday, said he was "stunned" by the decision to let him go nearly three months into another disappointing season. Jerry Manuel, a thinking man's manager if there ever was one, served as a coach under Willie Randolph for three years before being named to as his replacement on June 17, 2008. The promotion from bench coach put Manuel on the line to revive a team that had sputtered to a 34-35 record, good for no more than third place in the National League East.

Frustrated Earnhardt won't blame Kyle Busch - (Sports, 6 articles)
Hamlin arrived 15th in the point standings but held on after twice finishing in the top three as one of the only cars able to run with the Hendrick teams here. He had seven top-10 finishes in the first nine races, and when Denny Hamlin's dominance in the first 381 laps of Saturday's short-track race ended with a flat tire, Earnhardt moved to the front. After Hamlin stopped on the track instead of limping to pit road, the caution allowed Busch - whom Earnhardt replaced at Hendrick - to get on Earnhardt's bumper for the restart.

Nadal determined see Federer at Wimbledon (Sports, 9 articles)
Saturday in London, two days before Wimbledon begins, the world's three top men's players are all but certain to be voted on to the player council of the Association of Tennis Professionals. That would be a most unusual move in an era when the game's stars are typically more preoccupied with hitting big forehands and maximizing their big earnings than addressing the broader issues facing the sport. Roger Federer extended his unbeaten streak on grass to 59 matches Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Philipp Kohlschreiber in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany.

Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang is expected to be sidelined until at least September after injuring his foot running the bases, prompting club co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner to chastise the National League for playing without a designated hitter. An examination in New York yesterday showed Wang partially tore a tendon and sprained his right foot Sunday during the Yankees' 13-0 interleague win at Houston. He will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for a minimum of six weeks, the latest blow to the team's banged-up pitching staff.

Thierry Henry deflected in Daniele De Rossi's 30-yard free-kick just past the hour as the world champions joined the group winners Holland in the quarters. Andrea Pirlo put Italy in front from the penalty spot in the 25th minute of Tuesday's eagerly-anticipated repeat of the 2006 World Cup final after Eric Abidal clattered into Luca Toni and was dismissed by Slovakian referee Lubos Michel. Abidal's sending off was a second hammer blow for the French after inspirational playmaker Franck Ribery was carried off on a stretcher at Zurich's Letzigrund stadium with a knee injury.

TORONTO Russian center Igor Larionov and and former Edmonton Oilers winger Glenn Anderson were elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday along with former linesman Ray Scapinello and junior hockey builder Ed Chynoweth. A 17-man panel is currently responsible for making the Hall selections and at least 75 percent of those men must endorse a candidate for him to gain election. This was probably Anderson's last really good shot because the NHL lockout kept any new players from playing their last game three years ago and becoming eligible.
