Mrs. Clinton won a close race in New Jersey, where voters said that the economy was the most important issue in deciding how to cast their vote, according to exit polls. The majority of the Hispanic voters, who make up roughly 20 percent of the total vote, sided with Mrs. Clinton, according to the exit polls, while black voters overwhelmingly supported Mr. Obama. Democratic primary voters overwhelmingly said that a candidate's ability to bring about needed change was the most important factor in the way they voted, and those voters supported Mr. Obama in large numbers. Illinois and Georgia were two states in which Democratic voters said that Mr. Obama would make a better commander in chief than Mrs. Clinton. In this state's caucus vote, which exit polls indicated would be close, Democrats were divided largely by ethnicity and age. WASHINGTON - Barack Obama's campaign named new senior advisers on Monday, including former Hillary Rodham Clinton campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle as chief of staff to the presidential candidate's yet-to-be-chosen running mate.

Some clergy members in California spent Tuesday officiating at same-sex weddings made legal by a State Supreme Court ruling that took effect on Monday night. SAN FRANCISCO - County clerk offices opened their doors Tuesday to hundreds of gay and lesbian couples with appointments to secure marriage licenses and exchange vows on the first full day same-sex nuptials were legal throughout California. Hundreds more couples lined up for marriage vows today after San Francisco's City Hall hosted the state's first legal gay wedding late Monday for two women who waited more than 50 years to tie the knot.

Just before the truce went into effect an Israeli missile strike killed one Palestinian gunman and wounded another near the border fence with Israel in the central part of the Gaza Strip, medical workers and militants said. JERUSALEM - A long-sought truce between Israel and Gaza militants went into effect early Thursday, with the aim of halting militant attacks and a bruising Israeli blockade that have made life unbearable for people living on both sides of the border. Israel and militant group Hamas have agreed to end months of bitter clashes with a six-month truce starting on Thursday, Palestinian officials say.
