Castro condemns EU's 'hypocrisy'
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
BRUSSELS, Belgium (CNN) Members of the European Union decided Thursday to formally lift sanctions on Cuba, a spokeswoman for EU Secretary-General Javier Solana said. (article 4) Christina Gallach said the decision, made over dinner during the first day of a planned two-day summit in Brussels, Belgium, will be formally confirmed Monday during an EU council meeting. (article 4) The diplomatic sanctions, which limited visits to the Communist island by senior EU personnel, were imposed in 2003 after concerns were raised about human rights in Cuba. (article 4) The move was seen as an attempt to encourage Cuban President Raul Castro, who recently took the reins of power from his ailing brother , Fidel, to make progress on civil rights, officials said. (article 4) The United States, which has maintained a decades-long trade embargo against Cuba, criticized the move, saying there were no significant signs that a dictatorship on the island was easing. (article 6) " There will be very clear language also on what the Cubans still have to do... releasing prisoners, really working on human rights questions Ferrero-Waldner told reporters at an EU summit. (article 6) Lawmakers backed the measures by a large majority despite opposition from many Socialist and Green parties, and condemnation from human rights groups. (article 2)
