Home prices, gasoline giving consumers gloom :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Personal Finance
Summary from United States, from articles in English
As housing prices continue to tumble in most regions, forecasters from Chapman University said Tuesday that the U.S. economy had fallen into a recession that wouldn't ease until next year. (article 9) WASHINGTON - Confidence among Americans dropped to the lowest level in 16 years and house prices fell the most on record, raising the risk that consumers will cut back on purchases after spending their tax rebates. (article 2) The Conference Board's consumer confidence index plunged to 50.4 this month, hurt by inflation, sinking home values and soaring gas prices. (article 4) NEW YORK - U.S. home prices tumbled in April at the fastest rate since a widely followed index was begun in 2000, with all 20 metropolitan areas surveyed - including Seattle - posting annual declines for the first time. (article 6) The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index of 20 cities fell by 15.3 percent in April versus last year, according to Tuesday's report. (article 7) The last holdout, Charlotte, N.C., finally succumbed to the national housing downturn, with prices there slipping 0.1 percent year-over-year. (article 7) NEW YORK- No matter who's measuring, the results are the same: Housing prices are tumbling at the sharpest rates ever with a bottom still at least a year away, economists say. (article 8)
