FDA still puzzled by salmonella outbreak thought to be from tomatoes
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Investigators who spent nearly a month searching for the cause of a salmonella outbreak in tomatoes are now holding and testing shipments of imported jalapenos at the Mexican border in hopes of finding the outbreak strain. (article 6) TORONTO - Four Canadians, including two Alberta men who travelled to Texas on business, have tested positive for the strain of salmonella responsible for a large food poisoning outbreak in the United States. (article 5) With a salmonella scare causing many customers to shun what's normally a summertime favorite, tomato farmers nationwide have had to plow under their fields and leave their crop to rot in packinghouses. (article 11) As losses across the supply chain top $100 million, industry leaders are calling for a congressional investigation into the government's handling of the outbreak, the source of which hasn't been determined. (article 11) Close to 1,000 people in 40 states have been sickened by the salmonella bacteria so far, and health officials are desperate to find the source. (article 3) WASHINGTON - The U.S. government has increased the number of people reported being sickened in a record salmonella outbreak in which tomatoes are the leading suspect. (article 8) Starting Monday, FDA inspectors will expand the salmonella search beyond tomatoes to include cilantro, jalapeno and serrano peppers, scallions and onions. (article 1)
