Obama declares he is the Democratic nominee :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: Barack Obama (U.S., 38 articles)

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday campaigned in Georgia, a Republican-leaning state that his campaign hopes to turn blue. Democrats preparing to vote in Tuesday's California primary can mark their ballots with confidence, knowing that eithercandidate would make a strong nominee and, if elected, a groundbreaking leader and capable president. Barack Obama, who, at 46, is barely a baby boomer, has often said that the country needs to move beyond its Vietnam-era cultural divides and come together for the future. The Democratic presidential contender cast his vote one day after telling a campaign audience that accounts of a shift toward the center on the Iraq War, guns, the death penalty and other issues were unfounded. ST. PAUL, Minn. Barack Obama claimed the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday night in a long-time-coming victory speech that minced no words about his opponent in the fall campaign, Republican John McCain. Democrats in 420 Maine towns and cities were deciding how the state's 24 delegates will be allotted at the party's national convention in August. Last November, Mark Penn, then the chief strategist for Hillary Rodham Clinton, derisively said Barack Obama's supporters " look like Facebook.
