Spokane Valley fire destroys at least 13 homes, burns 1,200 acres

SPOKANE - The number of homes destroyed by a wildfire in the Spokane Valley rose to 13 as firefighters gradually moved into a heavily-wooded area that was devastated by wind-driven flames on Thursday. (article 6) Here's a look at the wildfires burning across Eastern Washington on Friday as firefighters were aided by cooler temperatures and diminishing winds: -The Valley View Fire in the Spokane Valley has burned 13 houses east of Spokane. (article 7) California's wildfire season has become so severe so swiftly that for the first time in more than 30 years, National Guard troops have been deployed to fight the flames on the ground. (article 2) The Guard is stepping in as crews across the state struggle to contain hundreds of lightning-sparked fires that have burned more than 1,000 square miles and destroyed nearly 100 homes in the past three weeks. (article 2) A message on Paradise's Web site by the town manager urged a speedy exit: " Citizens need to immediately evacuate by gathering personal belongings that will fit in your vehicle. (article 5) The Butte fire has burned 49,000 acres since starting June 21, destroyed at least 50 structures including 40 homes and now threatens an estimated 3,800 more residences, according to firefighting agency Cal Fire.
