2 Vetoes Quash U.N. Sanctions on Zimbabwe

(article 7) UNITED NATIONS - Russia and China vetoed proposed sanctions on Zimbabwe鈥檚 leaders Friday, rejecting U.S. efforts to step up punitive measures against the authoritarian regime after a widely discredited presidential election. (article 5) JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - Zimbabwe's opposition party reported Friday that at least 113 of its members have been killed in political violence since the country held its first round of presidential voting in March. (article 6) Zimbabwe s ruling party began preliminary discussions with the opposition on Thursday in an effort to settle a political crisis in which both sides have staked a claim to the nation's presidency. (article 10) The European Parliament on Thursday called for tighter economic sanctions against President Robert Mugabe's government in Zimbabwe and urged the international community, including African nations, not to recognize his re-election. (article 8) The EU assembly voted overwhelmingly, 591 to 8, demanding EU nations draft and implement new sanctions against Mugabe's government and take additional measures to dissuade European companies from doing business in Zimbabwe. (article 8)
