NATO: Insurgents try to pit Afghanistan against Pakistan

WASHINGTON (CNN) Insurgents fired simultaneously on Pakistan and Afghanistan positions Thursday night in hopes of provoking a battle between the two military forces, NATO officials said Friday. (article 4) U.S. forces were called into action on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border after Afghan security forces came under fire from insurgents inside Pakistan, NATO said. (article 4) The swelling forces of Taliban and Al Qaeda fighters in Pakistan's border region pose a grave threat to American and NATO troops in Afghanistan. (article 1) More foreign fighters, including al-Qaeda militants, are operating in Pakistan's tribal region than before, America's top soldier has said. (article 3) WASHINGTON - American military and intelligence officials say there has been an increase in recent months in the number of foreign fighters who have traveled to Pakistan s tribal areas to join with militants there. (article 2) American intelligence officials say that some jihadist Web sites have been encouraging foreign militants to go to Pakistan and Afghanistan, which is considered a " winning fight compared with the insurgency in Iraq, which has suffered sharp setbacks recently. (article 2) Col. Peter Petronzio said the figure came from the governor of the southern Helmand province, where his troops have been deployed since late April. (article 5)
