South Korea's Lee offers talks with North
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
BEIJING A North Korean soldier shot and killed a South Korean tourist early Friday at a mountain resort in the isolated Communist country, a development that could further chill relations between the two countries. (article 7) South Korean spokesman Kim Ho-nyeon said the tourist, identified as Park Wang-ja was out walking when she strayed near a military area. (article 7) A tourism company reported that the woman was shot shortly before dawn on Friday after wandering into a fenced-off military area near Diamond Mountain, a tourism zone that was opened to South Koreans in 1998. (article 3) A spokesman for South Korea's Unification Ministry, Kim Ho-nyeon, announced that the government was suspending tours to the North's Diamond Mountain resort pending an investigation of the shooting. (article 2) BEIJING - Negotiators at international talks aimed at disarming North Korea's nuclear program struggled Saturday to reach agreement on ways to verify the communist nation's declaration of its atomic materials. (article 8) SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on Friday proposed reopening stalled reconciliation talks with North Korea in an address to the opening session of the National Assembly. (article 1) Correspondents say President Lee's previous hardline stance towards the South's communist northern neighbour had left Seoul sidelined in these talks. (article 4)
