Chavez, Uribe aim to mend Venezuela-Colombia relations -
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Venezuela鈥檚 President Hugo Ch谩vez on Friday met his Colombian counterpart , Alvaro Uribe, a man he once branded a mafioso, a criminal and a liar, and swore he would never again clap eyes upon. (article 8) Relations hit their lowest point in March, when Mr Chavez sent troops to the border following a Colombian raid against a rebel camp inside Ecuador. (article 5) Although the two countries are major trading partners, relations have suffered because their two leaders come from opposite ends of the political spectrum. (article 5) Venezuela's Hugo Chavez and Colombia's Alvaro Uribe mended relations Friday after months of sniping that threatened trade and unleashed a diplomatic crisis between Latin America's top U.S. opponent and closest U.S. ally. (article 3) Chavez, who just months ago called reconciliation impossible, said the talks allowed the two to " completely turn the page after the storm that passed. (article 3) The countries share some $6 billion in annual trade, and the leaders pledged to link the Andean neighbors with a new railway. (article 3) For both presidents, " the interest right now is to lower the level of confrontation and strengthen relations in common areas, especially the economy said analyst Sadio Garavini, a former Venezuelan diplomat. (article 2)
