Dr. Michael DeBakey, who pioneered bypass surgery, dead at 99

DeBakey, a medical pioneer who was the driving force in developing the field of cardiac surgery, operating on more than 60,000 patients and developing medical technology that saved millions more, has died. (article 4) HOUSTON - Dr. Michael DeBakey, the world-famous cardiovascular surgeon who pioneered such now-common procedures as bypass surgery and invented a host of devices to help heart patients, has died. (article 1) DeBakey died Friday night at The Methodist Hospital in Houston from " natural causes according to a statement issued early Saturday by Baylor College of Medicine and The Methodist Hospital. (article 1) The doctor counted world leaders among his patients and helped turn Baylor from a provincial school into one of the great medical institutions of the United States. (article 7) HOUSTON - When Dr. Michael E. DeBakey pushed forward with his groundbreaking research and maverick approach to medicine a half century ago, heart surgery was a medical marvel. (article 3) As a Tulane University medical student in 1932, Dr. DeBakey devised the " roller pump an essential component of the heart-lung machine that permitted open-heart surgery. (article 6)
