Venezuela, Colombia to meet on mending relations

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa angrily declined Saturday to follow the example of his ally on the South American left, Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez (article 5) Relations between the neighbors have been strained since Colombia mounted a raid in Ecuadorean territory in March that killed Colombian leftist rebel leader Raul Reyes. (article 5) Chavez, who just months ago called reconciliation impossible, said the talks allowed the two to " completely turn the page after the storm that passed. (article 3) The countries share some $6 billion in annual trade, and the leaders pledged to link the Andean neighbors with a new railway. (article 3) Latin America's top U.S. opponent and closest U.S. ally will set aside their on-and-off feud for talks on Friday because, analysts say, each benefits politically from normalized relations. (article 4) For both presidents, " the interest right now is to lower the level of confrontation and strengthen relations in common areas, especially the economy said analyst Sadio Garavini, a former Venezuelan diplomat. (article 4) Chavez responded by briefly dispatching troops to Venezuela's border with Colombia, pulling his ambassador and threatening to cut back trade. (article 4) Up until the turn of this century, the FARC had at least a modicum of political legitimacy. (article 1)
