CUBS IN BRIEF The Cubs' high hopes for the present and the future crossed paths at Wrigley Field before the game Thursday. (article 1) Granted, the new Cubs pitcher didn't face any hitters, throwing only a light side session before his scheduled debut Saturday. (article 5) The guys who actually threw to hitters Ted Lilly, for starters didn't have such a great day in a 12-7 loss to the Cincinnati Reds, just the third loss in the Cubs' last 20 home games. (article 8) The Cubs signed first-round draft pick Andrew Cashner on Thursday, giving the right-hander a deal that includes a $1.54 million signing bonus, $75,000 toward education and an invitation to spring training next year. (article 2) `` I 'm really looking forward to getting going Cashner said after a throwing session at Wrigley Field under the watch of Cubs' pitching coach Larry Rothschild. (article 2) Just past 5:30 p.m., as the L train clattered and the W flag swayed and an enemy manager named Dusty Baker leaned obliviously against the batting cage, Rich Harden jogged in from the outfield with his new teammates.
