PM criticises UN Zimbabwe failure

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - The failure of the United States campaign to gain approval for international sanctions on Zimbabwe s leaders returns the focus to South African efforts to end the political crisis in Zimbabwe. (article 9) Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, in a voting day message to supporters distributed by e-mail, said the results of the balloting would " reflect only the fear of the people of Zimbabwe. (article 10) A draft resolution to impose sanctions on Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and a number of his key allies has been vetoed at the UN Security Council. (article 3) " The key thing is that the Russians decided to vote against it said John Sawers, the British ambassador to the United Nations. (article 6) JOHANNESBURG - Zimbabwe s ruling party began preliminary discussions with the opposition on Thursday in an effort to settle a political crisis in which both sides have staked a claim to the nation's presidency. (article 11) The United States pushed for a swift vote to apply UN sanctions on Zimbabwe's leaders yesterday after Russia backed away from an apparent deal at the G8 summit. (article 5) Crisis talks in the UN corridors led to the vote being postponed until today because of the risk of a veto by Moscow or Beijing. (article 5)
