In the iPhone App Store, Developers’ Playground With Apple as Referee (Science/Technology, 17 articles)
TOKYO - Throngs of eager iPhone fans queued up outside stores in 21 countries around the world on Friday to get their hands on Apple Inc.'s new iPhone 3G, but activation problems dampened the fervor. The problem caused huge delays at Apple stores and other iPhone service providers worldwide, as store personnel wrestled with the issue and word of the problem spread on the Web. A glitch with the online registration system run by the O2 network meant that many people could not activate their devices at Apple stores. TOKYO - The new iPhone went on sale at a Tokyo store Friday, making its debut in Japan, amid swirling smoke after a 30-second countdown chanted by hundreds of people lined up, some for days, snaking around the block. The store in downtown Tokyo of Japanese carrier Softbank Corp.'s store, started selling Apple Inc.'s much awaited cell phone five hours ahead of the other stores in the nationwide chain. Gadget lovers worldwide are already camped out ahead of Friday's global rollout of the new model of Apple Inc.'s iPhone, which is also the first iPhone to go on sale in many countries.
