ABC News: Darfur Genocide Warrant for Sudan Pres.
Summary from Canada, from articles in English
The United Nations is set to begin withdrawing non-essential staff from its 10,900-person mission to Sudan's troubled Darfur region, as reprisals against the international organization loom following the indictment on genocide charges of the country's leader. (article 1) Tension was already high after an attack last week by Sudanese militias on a team of UN blue berets in Darfur left seven peacekeepers dead. (article 1) On Sunday, his ruling National Congress Party warned of "more violence and bloodshed" in Darfur if its leader was indicted. (article 1) Omar al-Bashir is the third person from Sudan charged at the International Criminal Court in connection with the atrocities in Darfur. (article 2) Court prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo is also seeking a worldwide arrest warrant to have al-Bashir brought before the international tribunal for his role in the five-year-old conflict. (article 2) The charges accuse the top leadership of the Sudanese government of sponsoring militia groups called janjaweed, which have attempted to wipe out African tribes in Darfur with a campaign of murder, rape and deportation. (article 2) Moreno-Ocampo was undeterred by concern that his indictment against al-Bashir might lead to vengeance against Darfur refugees, and the closing of Sudan's doors to relief agencies and possibly peacekeeping troops. (article 2)
