For youths at risk for high cholesterol, statins are the best remedy
Summary from United States, from articles in English
Statins, one of the most frequently prescribed drugs for adults worldwide, could be prescribed for some children as young as 8, according to recommendations released last week by the American Academy of Pediatrics. (article 3) " My own practice and the new guidelines emphasize the importance of lifestyle as the approach to lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease Lewis says. (article 3) For 20 years, statins have been shown to be largely safe and effective, with no cumulative side effects, for adults. (article 2) Now the nation's leading pediatric group says that certain high-risk children as young as 8 may also be put on statin therapy, just like Mom, Dad and Grandpa. (article 1) They worry about the long-term health consequences of the drugs and have raised questions about financial ties between the academy and drug companies. (article 1) An estimated 13 percent of children have total cholesterol above 200 milligrams per deciliter, the threshold used in adults to determine high cholesterol. (article 1) They say that far from leading to widespread use of statin drugs by children, the guidelines target the small percentage of children with genetic cholesterol problems or those with several worrisome risk factors, like obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes. (article 1)
