Seeing Bad Loans, Investors Flee From Bank Shares
Summary from United States, from articles in English
While a fraction of the nation's banks are expected to buckle under their growing burden of bad loans, federal regulators, bank executives and analysts agree that the vast majority of institutions are sound. (article 6) The failure of IndyMac, one of the biggest banks to go under in US history, has sparked fresh fears about the survival of other lenders exposed to the faltering mortgage market. (article 3) Regulators had already warned about an increase in bank failures in the coming months, not least as the fallout from the credit crisis and the deterioration in the housing market spilled over into the "real" economy. (article 3) Banks in Colorado, Maryland, Georgia and California top privately-prepared lists of troubled banks being circulated on Wall Street and in Washington. (article 8) The lists use versions of the so-called "Texas ratio" which compare a bank's assets and reserves to its non-performing loans, based on financial data made public by the FDIC in March. (article 8) Even as the Bush administration moved to rescue the nation's two largest mortgage finance companies, confidence in the banking sector spiraled downward Monday. (article 4) As home prices continue to decline and loan defaults mount, federal regulators are bracing for dozens of American banks to fail over the next year. (article 5)
