Nintendo and Sony Underwhelm at E3 (Entertainment, 6 articles)
At a later press conference, Sony unveiled a film download service and an 80-gigabyte hard drive version of PS3 for gamers in North America. Sony on Tuesday launched a movie download service for its PlayStation 3 and boosted the console's capacity as it sought to keep pace with rival Microsoft. Sony said it had signed up the major studios to its service, which would provide both standard and high-definition movies and TV shows for rent or to purchase. Jack Tretton told a news conference at the E3 industry show that Sony's service was different from other services by its portabiity. The giants of the video games industry gather in Los Angeles this week for the E3 conference, and all sights are set on the mass market. Difficult and expensive launch periods have been completed, developers have got to grips with the demands of new hardware and a growing market of gamers is hungry for new content. What lies ahead for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? Eight years after Bill Gates first announced plans for a Microsoft games console, called the Xbox, the company has yet to lead the market significantly in any territory.
