Obama campaign says New Yorker cartoon goes too far
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Republican nominee-apparent John McCain's spokesman, Tucker Bounds, seemingly too bored with the controversy to come up with an original epithet, simply agreed that the cover was " tasteless and offensive. (article 8) Above the burning hearth - fueled by an American flag - is a partial portrait of terrorist mastermind Osama bin Laden. (article 3) The cartoon is not explained in the July 21 issue, but the magazine said yesterday that the artist , Barry Blitt, is satirizing " the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the presidential election to derail Barack Obama's campaign. (article 3) (The New Yorker/Associated Press) The New Yorker magazine has stirred up controversy in the U.S. for a satirical cover that shows Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama dressed as a Muslim and his wife as a terrorist. (article 5) The illustration by artist Barry Blitt depicts Obama wearing traditional Muslim garb and his wife, Michelle - dressed in camouflage, combat boots and an assault rifle strapped over her shoulder - standing in the Oval Office. (article 5) The New Yorker said the cover, called "The Politics of Fear", was a critique of unfounded allegations that have tried to portray Mr Obama as a closet radical Muslim. (article 4)
