Women over 40 with depression may be at risk of developing heart disease: study
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Though depression in women is associated with a higher risk of heart disease, it's not the case with men, suggests new research from Statistics Canada. (article 1) It found that among people aged 40 or older without heart disease in 1994/1995, 19 per cent of men and 15 per cent of women had developed or passed away from heart disease by 2006/2007. (article 1) TORONTO - A new study released Wednesday suggests there may be a connection between depression and developing heart disease in middle-aged women. (article 2) These findings add greater urgency to the American Heart Association's ongoing "Go Red for Women" campaign, which seeks to change the perception that high blood pressure and heart disease are "male" health threats. (article 4) The British report, published inCirculation, shows that poor blood sugar control in post-heart surgery patients is linked to a fourfold increase in death and major complications, such as heart attack, neurological, kidney, lung and gastrointestinal injury. (article 5) Adults with cardiovascular trouble scored up to 9 percent lower on four scales measuring their quality of life, according to a report in the July 15 issue ofCirculation, from researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (article 3)
